Top 10 Treks In Nepal

 1 Manaslu Circuit Trek:

The Manaslu Circuit Trek has become more accessible since new lodges were built in 2010. It earns the top spot in this list because the trek has all the great features you’d expect from a classic Himalayan trek deep lush valleys at lower elevations, amazing views of 8,000m peaks, and a 5,000 m+ pass crossing all the while remaining largely unspoiled by visitors.
Despite its rising popularity, the Manaslu Circuit still feels very remote, and has fewer trekkers than the more established classic treks of Nepal.

2 Three Passes Trek:

The Three Passes Trek takes you over three 5,000m+ passes and is the best way to truly experience the Everest Region for those who have the time to spend 3 weeks on the trail. The trek includes sections of the Everest Base Camp Trek, but offers even more spectacular views of the giants in the heart of the Himalaya as you cross the Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La passes. The Three Passes trek can be combined with other variations of the Everest Base Camp Trek.

3 Annapurna Base Camp Trek:

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes you deep into the Annapurna Massif to the foot of Annapurna South. The scenery is quite different from most other classic treks because the views are less expansive and more vertical: you find yourself looking almost straight up to see the mountains towering above you.

4 Upper Mustang Trek:

The arid valley of the Upper Mustang Trek features a distinct landscape compared to almost all other treks in Nepal. With its many shades of brown and crumbling sandstone cliffs, this region lies in the desert rain shadow of the Himalaya. Mustang used to be its own kingdom, and its strong Tibetan-influenced traditions make this a culturally very interesting trek.

5 Upper Dolpo Trek:

With three 5,000m+ passes, the extremely remote Upper Dolpo Trek follows centuries old trading routes leading trekkers through surreal landscapes. You’ll meet Yak herders who lead rural lifestyles that are increasingly rare in our connected world.

6 Gokyo Lakes Trek:

Like the Three Passes Trek, the Gokyo Lakes Trek shares significant sections with the classic Everest Base Camp Trek but takes you into a valley west of Everest. Its main attraction are the beautiful lakes at Gokyo, at around 5,000 meters. From there, trekkers can climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m /17,575 ft), a rocky peak with one of the best expansive views on Mt Everest.

7 Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek:

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal because of its sustained elevation, spending 3 days in a row trekking over snow above 5,000m without an easy way down. That said, if you have experience and are up for the challenge, this trek is an unforgettable adventure that takes you into the heart of some the highest mountains in the world.

8 Nar Phu Valley Trek:

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a real Himalayan wilderness experience that is as unforgettable as it is spectacular. The area  opened to visitors relatively recently, in 2002. Tucked between the more visited Annapurna and Manaslu regions, Nar Phu is a true hidden gem that offers trekkers a rare opportunity to explore unspoiled valleys that feature a mix of raw Himalayan nature and ancient Buddhist culture.

9 Everest Base Camp Trek:

The Everest Base Camp Trek is among the most famous treks in the world. It certainly deserves its reputation thanks to its history, its great views and the Sherpa culture you experience during the trek. However, since the trek is so popular, its main trails tend to be quite crowded. This is why we list other treks in the Everest region (Three Passes Trek and Gokyo Lakes) higher on our list. Yet despite the crowds, Everest Base Camp continues to be a great trek that deserves to be listed among Nepal’s best treks.

10 Annapurna Circuit Trek:

The Annapurna Circuit trek is another quintessential Himalayan trek that has lost a bit of its character due to the crowds, and, in this particular case, recently constructed roads. The roads that have reduced the “unspoiled” part of this trek to about 12 days of hiking. Despite all that, the trek remains a great adventure with the crossing of the 5,416m Thorong La pass.

World Deepest Valley Arun Valley

The Arun is the largest trans-Himalayan river passing through Nepal and also has the greatest snow and ice-covered area of any Nepalese river basin. The Arun drains more than half of the area contributing to the Sapta Kosi river system but provides only about a quarter of the total discharge. This apparent contradiction is caused by the location of more than 80 percent of the Arun's drainage area in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. Average annual rainfall in Tibet is about 300 millimeters.

The river leaves the Tibet region at a height of about 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) and crosses the main Himalayan ranges. Leaving their rain shadow, the river's flow increases substantially in the monsoonal climate of east Nepal. The landscape south of the border tends to be steep with less than 15 percent of the area having a sustained slope of less than 15° and is strongly dissected by stream channels. Many of the hill slopes are structurally unstable, and the region is seismically active. An earthquake in August 1988, with an epicentre more than 50 km south of the Arun basin, had a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale and resulted in more than 100 deaths in the basin alone.

Tips For Trekking of Everest Base Camp

1. Mentally Prepare.
Depending on your level of comfort with the outdoors, you may need to prepare yourself for life
in the mountains.  Luckily, I am a lover of the outdoors and very comfortable with the mountain life, including camping, bugs, dirt, baby wipe showers, and going to the toilet outdoors!  However, for some who are more comfortable with the four seasons than a campsite, you may need to prepare yourself for what is to come.  All accommodation on our trek to Everest Base Camp is in small tea houses, run by the local Sherpa people.  You will have a bed to sleep in (albeit not the most comfortable bed in the world, but a bed to say the least), in a twin-shared room.  There are options for showers lower down on the trail, if you decide to use them, however, many people keep clean by using baby wipes and a bowl of warm water each day.  The toilet situations can be difficult at times, as in the tea houses they are generally not Western-style toilets, rather just a hole in the ground instead of a toilet bowl.  You will also need to be prepared to use the great outdoors at times when you are on the trail with no tea house nearby.  You do need to prepare yourself for these things, as you do not want to arrive on the mountain and have higher expectations and be disappointed.

2.What to Pack – Here is a list of everything we suggest

  • Extra layers, gloves, wind breaker and poncho
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip Balm with Sunscreen
  • Broad brimmed hat or bandana (for sun protection)
  • Iodine Water Tablets (personal preference)
  • Water Bottles or Camel Back
  • Sunglasses
  • Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Favorite Snacks
  • Waterproof bags to protect electronics or paperwork
  • Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
  • Umbrella (works great in a light rain or to protect from the sun)
  • Duct tape or moleskin for blisters
  • Toilet Paper
  • Trekking Poles (optional)
  • Thermos (optional for hot beverages)
4.Getting a Good Nights Rest You will probably be surprised at how comfortable the tea houses are on the trek but one bedroom walls are thin and noise carries quite easily. If you’re a light sleeper I recommend bring some foam ear plus for a good nights sleep.
5.Prepare for Cold and Rain If it’s sunny you might be surprised at how warm it can get during the day. Most trekkers wear t-shirts and shorts for the first few days while the elevation is still low. When the sunsets the temperatures drop quick. Wear a warm hat while sleeping and take a Nalgene bottle filled with hot water and keep it in your sleeping bag to stay warm.  Even if it looks like a sunny day make sure to carry a poncho in your day pack.
6.Stay Hydrated –  Make sure to drink plenty of water while on the trail and always keep a full bottle as a spare. You can buy bottled water from many of the tea houses along the trail during the day. Another option is to bring chlorine or iodine tablets and fill your bottle from the local streams. Ask your guide to point you in the right direction on this as most villages have a clearly identified water drinking water source that usually comes out of a pipe or hose along the trail.
7.Altitude Headaches  A headache can be one of the first signs of altitude problems.  Small headaches are common and should not stop you from trekking or worry you. However, it is worth mentioning to your guide and by all means if your headache gets progressively worse or you have other signs of altitude sickness it’s time to stop ascending or even head down.
8.Avoid the Sun Taking care of your skin and eyes is important. Sunburns happen much quicker at high elevation so make sure to apply sunscreen a few times a day and wear a hat. Sunglasses are a must have and if you wear prescription glasses its good to come to Nepal with a pair of prescription sunglasses or at least clip-ons.
9.Dress in Layers  Layering allows you to easily regulate your body temperature and stay comfortable while trekking.  It’s even better if your layers have zippers so that you have even more control of your body temperature.  You can find some more advice on how to layer and what to bring.
10.Hire a Porter While you can carry your own gear it’s a much more enjoyable not to be hauling a heavy pack up the mountain. If your feeling bad about having someone carry your stuff consider that your porter probably travelled several days from his village just to get to Lukla so he could get some work and take care of his family. The money you spend on salaries is an important part of the local economy.
11.Plan Extra Days at the End  If you have any extra days in Nepal plan them at the end of your trek and not the beginning. Inclement weather can delay the flights going out from Lukla and back to Kathmandu. If your held up in Lukla because of bad weather its best not to have an international flight going out the next day.
12.Go with an Established Tour Company  You probably think I threw this in here just to give our own company a plug so it’s probably better to relate it with a story.  My aunt went on a trek to Everest a few years back and decided not to use our company because it cost $50 more than the independent guide she found. Everything went well until she got back to Lukla where bad weather was limiting the number of flights going out. Our good relationships with the locals meant we were able to get our clients on some of the flights. On the other hand, my aunt was stuck for 2 days and missed her international flight making that $50 look like a lot less of a bargain. She told me this after the fact otherwise I would have tried to help but it’s a good story since it highlights how important having good local relationships is and it’s just one way of many an established company can add value.
However, the most important thing to bring is a good pair of trekking shoes that you have hiked in previously.  Kathmandu is a great place to buy trekking clothes that are both cheap and of decent quality. If you can bring your own sleeping bag otherwise you can rent one for about $1 a day.

3.Take Care of Your Feet –  Bad blisters can end a trek just as easily as altitude sickness. I recommend bring some duct tape or moleskin and treating as soon as you start to feel discomfort and not after it becomes an actual blister. Here’s a great article on how to do it from Backpacker.com – see the article.

The first trekker in Nepal was Bill tilman, who somehow wrangled permission from the maharaja in 1949 to make several treks, including the Kali Gandaki, Helambu and Everest. His Exploits are described in Nepal Himalaya, a mountaineering classic that has been reprinted by the Seattle Mountaineers as part of a Tilman collection, the Seven Mountain-travel Books. Anothere early visitor was maurice Herzog, who led a French expedition to Annapurna in 1950.

During kin Tribhuvan's visits to India, the king met Boris Lissnnivich, a Russian ballet dancer who was running a club in Calcutta.Boris Convinced the king that people would like to visit Nepal and would actually pay for the experience. Soon a few well- heeled landies flew from patan to kathmandu's Gaucher ('cowfield') airport in an Indian Airlines Dakota. Boris accommodeted them in his new establishment, the Roal Hotel. The women were charmed by Boris and the exotic kingdom of Nepal. Thus Nepali toursm was born. The Royal Hotel and its yak & Yeti bar became the meeting place fro climbers from the 1950s until 1971, when the Royal Hotel was closed.
Colonel James OM Roberts was the first person to realise that trekking would appeal to tourists. Jimmy Roberts had spent years in Nepal attached to the British residency and accompanied Tilman on his first trek. In 1965 he took a group of ladies up the kali Gandaki and founded Mountain Travel, the first of Nepal's trekking companies and the inspiration for the adventure travel industry.
